As this BitTorrent of old TeeGee matches and old skool league matches, is doing the rounds. I thought it best to put up some instructions on how to view the demos.

Keep in mind that these demos truly are old! The players, and the camera men are sitting on modems, so frames-per-second (or tics) start off pretty low. As the demos get more recent, you can really see the shift in netcode, and connectivity.

First off, you’re going to need a recent QuakeWorld client. ezQuake seems to do the trick. Next up, you need Qizmo. Qizmo is a QuakeWorld proxy, and is compatible with old skool QuakeWorld demos. I found FTEQW was able to play some .dem files that ezQuake and Qizmo could not.

Set-up ezQuake how you like it. ezQuake doesn’t seem to save its configuration automatically, so you have to bring down the console [~], and issue a ‘cfg_save myconfig’. Then when you start-up ezQuake, append ‘+cfg_load myconfig’ to the command line parameters.

Qizmo set-up is piss-easy. Simply edit the configuration file, and point it at your actual QuakeWorld directory.

Unzip, your .qwd files into your qw/ data directory, and execute Qizmo. Then execute ezQuake, and connect to Qizmo with a ‘/connect 127.0.0.1′. To navigate through Qizmo’s menu, you’ll also need to issue the command ‘.menu bind’

Job done, she’s good-to-go.

I just finished watching the TeeGee vs. Dark Preachers fiasco. I laughed so hard, I think a little bit of wee came out…

Not that I make a habit of blowing my own trumpet (I can’t reach, for a start.) But last night was my first time back at a number one spot, on a Quake IV public FFA server. Bloody hell! It was an exciting game, full of chance (aren’t they all?) and a little bit Quad-love.

The map was Firewall, and started with some stroke of chance mayhem from myself. Within the first 5 minutes I’d been awarded three Rapage medals. Then, as I shifted out of the zone, the rest of the combatents started to catch up. The match ended (for a breather), as _PSYLEE_, and myself were neck and neck all the way from 46 frags to 50!

Yes, the match went to Sudden Death! Just 1on1, _PSYLEE_ and I. It’s a big map, so we both started gathering up stock items. Then _PSYLEE_ grabbed the Quad’. I thought it was over, but I managed to avoid him till the Quad faded. Two minor confrontations occurred in which _PSYLEE_ backed out of. Then the Quad came up for grabs again, this time, I nabbed it.

I saw _PSYLEE_ by the RA, and I let off a volly of Quad Rockets. A little bit of splash damage, and he stepped down to the arena floor. This is where he made a fatal mistake, he then made a dash for the jump-pad to come back up. I loosed my few remaining rockets, and he took a little splash damage. Then he hit the jump-pad, vulnerable at the apex of his jump, I Quad Railed him in mid air… Game Over!

What a rush! :D

I was hanging around last night after getting back from a friend’s house. Whilst waiting for ScanmaN to update his new Quake IV install, I stumbled unto Parrais! He’s now back in touch :D

ScanmaN finally patched up, and I was ready to rock…

We hooked up on TeamSpeak, and in we went. First level was Phrantic… First time for both of us on this level, and ScanmaN trounced me!

Then it was the Fragging Yard. This time a level I’m farely familiar with. It’s not good enough for ScanmaN’s survival instincts. Although he did learn that rockets can pass through teleporters as well… After he chased me through one, and felt a rocket pass back through it :)

And the last was on Retrophobopolis. I’ll upload the screenshot later (I don’t have it to hand). A very nostalgic level with some slight differences. Duelling against ScanmanN on this level got me thinking in a more ‘3d’ sense. Looking down from ledges and up into the alcoves.

Great game Scan’ners!

The sLaughterhouse server, TeeGee’s long infamous battlegrounds has made a re-appearance as a Quake IV server, hosted by fps.net.

The sLaughterhouse has had many incarnations on the Internet. First it was the founding members’ LAN server, and private Internet server. Then InterphaZe’s server was also blessed with the name, and now, it’s back.

The name ’sLaughterhouse’ was originally inspired by the comic strip, ‘Finn‘ from the UK comic, 2000ad. The play on words that one letter can turn the meaning of Laughterhouse, into something far more sinister, seemed perfect for a Quake server.

The current sLaughterhouse can be found at 213.200.95.48:28003, and it’s passworded. I’ll post that password to TeeGee’s private Google Group.

We’ll see if we can find someway of hosting these precious gems of UK FPS history, most likely in original form, and via in-line movies.
