One of my presents for my *ahem* birthday, was Ghostbusters: The Video Game for the Playstation 3. Now, I had considered purchasing this game, so it’s one I’d have played either way. Being a child of the 80s, it was inevitable that I’d want to fulfil all those boyhood dreams be a Ghostbuster! Well – actually – I always wanted to be a scientist; but hey, these guys were paranormal researchers, all with PhDs or doctorates. They just got to kick some spectral bottom too!

However, the nearest thing up until this point has either been the ZX Spectrum Ghostbusters game, or running around in a jump-suit at fancy dress parties… And when everyone thinks you’ve come as Aneka Rice, you know it’s time to stay indoors, and turn on your PS3.

This game has just caught the image and appeal of the franchise very well. All the original Ghostbusters team provide voice talent, and the story was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. The graphic are great, without being over-done, the photon-beams are very faithful, the trapping is great, and the abuse of the physics engine lends well to modeling psycho-kinetic capable entities. See, I’m even sounding like one of the team.

The only niggle I have is that wrangling ghosts with a joy-pad just doesn’t translate that well, sure it’s fun, but it would probably be more fun if a friend could tie some rope to my hands whilst I’m playing, and occasionally drag me around the room whilst I was attempting to capture ghost in-game. But then we start drawing up analogies with the Aneka Rice gag… Perhaps this is a game which would lend itself to a fishing-reel like controller, or at least something with a little more buzz or force-feedback than a wireless controller.

Either way, it’s still a hoot, and I’m looking forward to trying some on-line play, once I complete the single-player game!

Since this web-site, and my personal blog have mentioned ‘Terminal Gibbage’, it’s been affecting the google rankings of various sites. One which has surfaced is Wintermute’s age old Quake2 Clan Skin.

Digging around the Terminus, and it appears that there were more Terminal Gibbage QuakeWorld skins than I was aware of. I should get on and do a second skin pack. Thanks to the way .pk4 are stacked, this won’t mean I’ll have to package both packs. They can be distributed independantly.

`ruiner` has retrieved The Terminus from deep archive. The site has been in the technical equivalent of pristine-shrink-wrap for the past eight years. `ruiner` has also uncovered 907mb of demos all given to him as one job lot by Jester.

We’ll see if we can find someway of hosting these precious gems of UK FPS history, most likely in original form, and via in-line movies.

It seems work progressed far quicker than expected. So, I’m releasing this Quake4 modification today (before I waste all my time tweaking it). Here you have Quake4 representations of the QuakeWorld skins for the Terminal Gibbage clan. Only a few clan members originally submitted skins, so not all clannies have a unique model, but the ‘base’ model is the generic one :)

Some of the folks who know my history with computers will know that I’m (almost ashamedly) responsible for starting the UK’s first Quake Clan. The Clan, Terminal Gibbage, originally consisted of myself and a couple of workmates (Anthrax, and Morph). It started off slow, until I was approached by an enthusiastic character named ‘Jester‘, we got talking about the iminent release of QuakeWorld, and both wanted to hit the scene running…

Jester convinced me that the Clan’s original, happy-go-lucky style to camaraderie would attract like minded people, who just wanted to meet up with fellow Quake/QuakeWorld players, and shoot-the-shit out of them… Online — of course.

I created a web site (TG Page), which unfortunately is no longer in existence, and does not appear in the Way Back Machine, but there is a ‘newer’ version there.

We hung out in IRC on #tg, and we participated in multiple Leagues, including the UKCL (United Kingdom Clan League), we had a skin in the QuakeWorld Skin Pack (called “terminal”).

Unfortunately, I can’t find a full roster, but the names that spring to mind are Grim, Ruiner, Onyx, Interphaz, Scanman, DocTee, Jester, Illusion, Nutz, Odyssey, Unzip, and Kami.Kaze.

And here’s Jester’s initial announcement that TG had opened its doors:

The UK based Quake clan Terminal Gibbage is now recruiting. We are prepared to give anyone a chance to prove there worth. Be warned we’re not just a clan who are just in it for the sake of being a clan. We are a group of serious Die-Hard Quake players and we are looking for gamers of the same nature.
